Falmouth Week (with a brand new feel)...

Falmouth Week is here once more and this year it's great to see the new Falmouth brand out there amongst the celebrations. After a long consultation with key Falmouth BID stakeholders and members of the public that started in the winter the Falmouth brand can now be seen on town maps, street furniture, flags with much more in the pipeline. We are currently building the new website which will act as a key marketing tool for the town so watch this space. Until then here's a glimpse at the Falmouth brand in action...

Battling in the bay

This week sees the start of Falmouth Week, lots of sea and shore based activities and one of the highlights will be the Pendennis Cup. The largest sailing yachts on the water will be competing for prestige and a chance to hold the trophy. The yachts are an amazing sight, the largest of the entrants is Adela, over 55 metres with her masts visible over the height of the National Maritime Museum's tower. The last event in 2008 saw some dramatic racing with broken yachts and bones. As well as creating the branding and exhibition materials for this year's event we have a competitor too - Danielle our Finance Manager will be crewing for Tomohawk so we wish them the best of luck. The yachts are all moored close to our studio in Events Square and the racing is happening across the bay, for more info: www.thependenniscup.co.uk

Truro uncovered

Last weekend saw the conclusion of a three-day exhibition on Lemon Quay that revealed Truro's rich and varied past. Our brief was to create an engaging and unusual display that would help to uncover the wealth of stories hidden in Cornwall's archives. Truro's success was built around trade and the port,

A simple recipe

Cornwall is a real foodie destination with a reputation for great local produce and fine dining,  and our latest client, George Thomas of Coswarth Farm, Newquay has struck upon a golden opportunity. You are likely to be familiar with the bright yellow fields that populate the countryside but may be unaware that Rapeseed can produce a culinary oil that boasts half the saturated fat of olive oil, high levels of Omega 3 and 6 and has a great taste. George's Oil has a fabulous golden colour and a mild, nutty flavour that is produced using no artificial anything. Our challenge was to name, brand and produce shelf-ready packaging in time to launch at this year's Royal Cornwall Show. Working closely with George we established a strong set of values that would help shape the brand and produce a contemporary Cornish product with a powerful shelf presence. 'Simply' reflects the oils honest production methods and allows scope for future product ranges,  punchy typography and a bold colour scheme transferred straight over to the marketing material to create a vibrant backdrop at the show. It was a pleasure be involved in such an original idea that has been so well received by both the public and trade and we look forward to working on more Simply products.

Lighthouses: Life on the Rocks shortlisted for National Lottery Awards 2010

'Lighthouses: Life on the Rocks' the major new exhibition currently running at the National Maritime Museum has been shortlisted to the semi-finals in the National Lottery Awards 2010. The hard work and late nights back in November and December of last year are a distant memory now as 25,000 museum visitors have so far immersed themselves in the story of Lighthouses and their keepers; from the tall tales of the lighthouse keepers themselves, to the massive scale of these triumphs of engineering. We created the branding and graphic interpretation and worked alongside NMMC and Concept Shed to design and produce the interactive features. A rich and dramatic subject has been delivered in an engaging and emotive design scheme that brings the subject to life. The voting is now closed for The National Lottery Awards 2010 so fingers crossed 'Lighthouses: Life on the Rocks get's the recognition it deserves.Click here to see images from the exhibition on Flickr.

Beyond super

We are exceptionally pleased to welcome Devonport Yachts as our new client after winning a three-way pitch to produce their communications. Devonport create Superyachts in the over 60 metre sector (thats unbelievably big to you and me). Already a well established brand with a portfolio of Yachts that range up to 110 metres in length they have shifted their operations to Falmouth in partnership with Pendennis. We'll be working hard to develop and refine the values of the brand and extend their communications to reflect a shift into new areas of this exclusive market.

Ok, Go

OK Go, of the famous treadmill music video have surpassed themselves by creating (in collaboration with James Frost and Syyn Labs) a masterpiece one shot video. If you think you've seen it before then you'd be (sort of) right, with the classic 'Cog' ad from Wiedens bearing comparison. A very satisfying ending bringing back memories of Mousetrap, by which the hardest soul will struggle not to raise a smile. It has awards written all over it.

The future looks bright

In April 2008 University College Falmouth (UCF) merged with Dartington College of Arts. The merger will pave the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall in 2012. We created a piece of communication to celebrate academic excellence as well as looking at the personalities behind the success - the staff and successful ex students. We commissioned two student photographers from BA(Hons) Press Photography, Oliver Rudkin and Tom Dymond to shoot eight staff at the college from a variety of disciplines and art directed them to convey their personality in a visually interesting way. From a studio in the animation department to a mine at Carn Brea with a robot we wanted to push the boundaries of a portrait in a work related context. Shot in medium format on film (just to make life that little harder for ourselves) the personalities shone through. Tom and Olie came up with some great results and are names to keep an eye out for in the future.

Life on the Rocks never looked so good

So after several hundred cups of tea, 32 pencils and 18 grey hairs later, the latest NMMC exhibition: Lighthouses: Life on the Rocks opened to the public. Jonathan Griffin opened the exhibition at the private view on Friday where it was great to meet some of the lighthouse keepers whose stories embody the exhibition. No knitted jumpers and pipes were spotted which was a slight disappointment but you can't have everything I suppose. It was an amazing journey of this:

Defining a destination

Positioning Cornwall as a great visitor destination is not a hard task on the face of it, stunning coastline, world class restaurants and bags of character - but stiff competition from cheap European flights, a long slow drive and the weather can make you think again. When we undertook the contract with Visit Cornwall (won for the sixth year) we decided to shake things up a bit. Our 2010 guides were the result of workshops with Cornish businesses, attractions and residents (we shared our secret spots!) to extract the best of our assets. The photography brief was to capture that sense of discovery you get from exploring Cornwall, and to reflect memories of your first visit for anyone returning. Unconventional writing and an editorial design approach deliver a more absorbing read and hopefully help you forget it's a 'brochure'.See the coverage in Drum for more detail. www.thedrum.co.uk/news

Life, but not as we know it

Work is well underway on our latest NMMC exhibition "Life on the Rocks" celebrating the life of lighthouse keepers and the stunning buildings (and ships) they lived in. It's been a crazy few months with the design and now the installation for our biggest NMMC exhibition to date. We'll all be at the private view with a glass of wine in hand but probably not a beard, a pipe and a wooly jumper.

Eden's Time of Gifts gets animated

After creating the new brand styling and illustrations for Eden's Time of Gifts we were really excited to see the animations the team at Eden have created from our designs. The website features the skaters moving around the biomes amongst the falling snow. Visit Eden's website to see the animations and also to see their TV advert for A Time of Gifts.

Real snow this time

I know, I know the whole country is talking about it and the news is full of snowmen and children making snow angels but it is quite unusual for Falmouth the get snow. So we did what any decent design agency would do and had a snowball fight. There were no winners but it's fair to say Jason lost!

No retouching required

I came across these lovely covers from Esquire and wondered at which point did mens magazine titles abandon design and decide to feature scantly clad ladies. It would take a brave art director to revert to the innovation of these designs from the late 50's and 60's, interestingly Paul Rand worked as art director for Esquire from 1936-41 and cues from his exquisite style can be referenced in these designs by Robert Benton. See the whole collection on the Esquire site, along with a few ladies…
